Carnaval seasonFebruary 2023
February witnesses the union of thousands of people across the world coming alive to the sounds of Carnaval, a global celebration known for its indulgence in excess and pleasure. Taking place prior to the Christian season of Lent, this gathering serves as a last opportunity for indulgence before the start of the fasting period.
In Search of MagicDecember 2023
It’s that time of the year again. The wilted flowers ready themselves for their annual ritual of decay, dissipated, becoming one again with the soil beneath them until Spring calls for their return. The excitement from candy-filled nights makes room for childlike wonder that springs among the shimmering decor snaking its way through our cities and homes.
For many, Christmas is a time of magic and awe, filled with stories and traditions passed down through generations. Decorating the tree, offering gifts, unwrapping presents and singing carols are customs steeped in enchantment and mystery. The stories and legends associated with this holiday, such as the tale of Santa Claus and his flying invisible reindeers, hint towards sorcery and fantasy. Even outside this festive season, we find an abundance of magic around us. Coming HomeSeptember 2022
As we approach the end of summer, friends and family return home from their travels with new lessons and intriguing stories of their adventures in their pockets. For some, coming home is returning to a physical space imbued in safety and comfort, a place they have always known, a place they feel rooted in, a residence, a house. Yet this neglects the subtle truth that home does not exclusively live within physical or geographical boundaries.

Iemanjà, Mother of those who are FishFebruary 2023
A warm, exotic and enticing floral scent trickles down the streets of Salvador as innumerable flowers drift from the shores of the Rio Vermelho bairro in Bahia. Every February countless believers make their way to the beach, throwing coins in the warm waters of the Brazilian east coast, carrying baskets of offerings for the goddess of the sea, Iemanjá. A procession of thousands of people dressed in white clap their hands in unison as they sing and dance in circles and worshippers say goodbye to miniature wooden boats built for the occasion, slowly disappearing into the dark blue horizons holding pictures of the Afro-Brazilian deity. Held in absolute secret for centuries until slavery was abolished, this celebration is now the largest religious manifestation in Bahia and embraced by individuals of all faiths.
In Praise of ShadowsOctober 2022
The trees begin to undress. The days shorten. As we rise and set in darkness, a distant yet familiar impulse echoes at the back of our mind, calling us to prepare for hibernation. Last month’s Fall Equinox brought balance between day and night, bridging the hours of darkness and light into subtle equilibrium. Although we have been culturally conditioned to fear darkness, the change of season presents a rite of passage into a new cycle, a new beginning. We leave behind the vibrancy of Summer as Fall welcomes us with a cool yet grounding embrace, encouraging us to turn inward, rekindle our relationship to darkness and immerse ourselves in its particular beauty.
A tribute to oystersJune 2022
Oysters have been present in our history for thousands of years - they were essential to the primitive humans as a food source. Early historical evidence shows that oysters were cooked and their shells were used as knives or spoons.
Rich in nutrients such as zinc, vitamin B12, C, D, E, thiamine, iron and magnesium, oysters also carry a symbology that goes beyond a food: a ritual that nourishes our senses, enchanting us with its poetic shape and mysterious aphrodisiac myth - which, despite the lack of scientific proof, it has already been associated by our collective imaginary for thousands of years with the figure of Aphrodite - the greek Goddess of Love. |
